What’s the name of the following functional form?

For any κ > 1, what is Γ(κ)? What’s the value of Γ(1/2)?

(Hint: do you recognize the Greek letter Γ?)

    This is a very important and oft-used function in statistics, so you should know it!
     
    Γ is the Greek letter "gamma," so this function is the gamma function. It forms the foundation of the popular gamma distribution, and it’s also often used to transform other functions.
     
    Γ(κ)=(κ-1)Γ(κ-1), and Γ(1/2)=sqrt(π).
