Sample Question #214 (mathematics)
What’s the name of the following functional form?
For any κ > 1, what is Γ(κ)? What’s the value of Γ(1/2)?
(Hint: do you recognize the Greek letter Γ?)
This is a very important and oft-used function in statistics, so you should know it!
Γ is the Greek letter "gamma," so this function is the gamma function. It forms the foundation of the popular gamma distribution, and it’s also often used to transform other functions.
Γ(κ)=(κ-1)Γ(κ-1), and Γ(1/2)=sqrt(π).
