Sample Question #202 (mathematics)

What does the 3-D plot of x2 + y2 = z2 look like, where x, y and z are all real numbers?

(Comment: being able to visualize what a 2-D curve or 3-D surface should look like for a few commonly-encountered functional forms is important in a quant’s everyday work)

    ANSWER
     
    Assuming z is the vertical axis. The surface looks like an inverted cone, with the apex at the coordinates (0, 0, 0).
