Common Mistake: Why Am I Here?

Common Mistake #7: cannot tell interviewer why you want to be a quant

So you want to be a quant. But why? What makes you want to get into this industry? Is it because of the money? Is it because of the perceived prestige? Is it because your boyfriend or girlfriend wants you to work on Wall Street? Is it because you truly feel passionate about the industry, even though you have never set your foot on Wall Street before?

When you go into an interview, make sure you have a list of reasons — at least two reasons — why you want to be a quant, and why you want to work in high finance. If you read my book, you know you should not mention money as a reason or motivation. So, be prepared to offer up some good, pleasant-sounding reasons that make the interviewer feel good about you!
