Sample Question #175 (mathematics – algebra)

Given a3 = 150b, where a and b are both positive integers, find the smallest value of b.

[Taken from the 2001-02 Hong Kong Mathematics Olympiad individual heat event]

(Comment: simple problems like this are often used by quant interviewers to test whether you approach every problem with rigor and whether you buckle under stress)

    150=2 * 3 * 5^2
    a^3 shoud be equal to 2^3 * 3^3 * 5^3
    b = 2^2 * 3^2 * 5 = 180
